Dilli Haat in January

On a chilly winter evening in January one place in Delhi welcomes foodies and shopaholics with open arms. This place is called Dilli Haat. My friends and I decided to go to Dilli Haat one evening last week when the sky was a beautiful shade of blue.



The place was decorated with lights and flags and the breeze ensured that both danced in harmony.


The lanterns and stars gave a rustic touch to the ambiance.

Musicians from Rajasthan kept the visitors entertained while they ate and shopped.


With several stalls of ear-rings I spoilt for choice.

There were several shoe stalls as well which caught my attention.
The knickknacks attracted us the most and we all bought something unique. Lopa bought this keychain.



We left after a round of loud of laughter over a delicious meal.

India in a cow

This installation at Dilli Haat is a representation of what the artist believes is everything Indian. There are some Hindu Gods, Bollywood actors and then the cow itself. Interesting and most certainly true!

Celebrations with a Christmas Hangover

I am extremely happy to share that Delhi Photo Diary has crossed the 1 million hits mark. Icing on the cake, this feat was achieved on the blog's third anniversary! Dilli Haat decided to be a part of the celebrations by continuing to be in a state of Christmas hangover.

Dancing Doll

This huge dancing doll is one of many that have been installed at various points within the premise of Dilli Haat. I saw a lot of people posing in front of them for photographs. Just a little push at the dress of the doll and it dances beautifully.

Dilli Haat Goes Rural

This wonderful display of a rural household has been set up at the entrance of Dilli Haat to greet the visitors who throng the place to enjoy the delicious food and enjoy shopping.

Birds

I could not resist myself from taking a photograph of this wooden toy I saw at Dilli Haat a few days ago. As the pendulum below moves, the birds on top bend to peck making a sound on the wooden platform.

Rajasthani Dance, Dilli Haat

This is a beautiful lady who was dancing in Dilli Haat to entertain visitors, ranging from within the city to foreign nationals, last evening.


No photo would have been able to do justice to the dance I saw in Dilli Haat yesterday. That is why I made a video. This is the Kalbeliya dance, which finds its origin in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The inspiration for the dance is serpents and same is the case with the dance movements and clothes.



Hope you enjoy the dance. Since I use my camera phone for this blog, the video has been shot vertically by mistake. Next time I'll do a better job. But I hope despite the pain in your neck, you will enjoy the dance. :-)

Threaded Bangles

This is Phooli, a woman, who makes and sells bangles outside the Dilli Haat complex. I had a fun talk with her and she convinced me to buy a dozen of these colorful bangles. These are a good buy to gift and if your are greedy like me to keep them all for yourself.

Colourful Hair Braiding

The lady in the photo sits outside of Dilli Haat and offers to braid hair with colourful threads at a reasonable price. A lot of college going students and people in their 20s are seen getting their hair braided. I have gotten my hair braided once or twice and can tell you for sure that a little yellow, violet or red in one's hair always makes for great conversation!
