Delhi Police

The slogan is painted on all the Police Control Rooms (PCR) vans of the Delhi Police. Though many people have really funny, or sometimes really sad stories to tell about the corruption of the Police Force of the Indian National Capital, but my experience has been only good so far. They have been very helpful on the few occasions that I was in need.

Levi's Square

I am back, fighting the many viruses that attacked my PC. Thanks to everyone for all the comments. Since I was cut from the virtual world, I decided to shop till I drop. This is one of the Levi's Store, called the Levi's Square that occupies a prime location in the posh market of South Delhi, aptly named South-Ex. It was time my blog had a pic of a good looking dude. :-)

Jai Hanuman

This is a huge temple built in the shape of the Hindu monkey God - Hanuman.I have taken this photo from a moving vehicle and the bridge running across Hanuman's chest is the Metro Railway track.

Picadelhi Man

Well I have been pasting loads of street vendors and just did not want to give the idea that Delhi is just about that. Delhi has a wide range of restaurants that suit almost all pocket sizes. Plus some like Picadelhi adjacent to PVR Palaza is a place that can burn a hole in your pocket if its street food you go looking for in the place. Their chocolate truffle pastry is something I would recommend though. This particular photo is of presumably of an Englishman, whiling away his time looking at beautiful girls. The whole ambiance of Picadelhi has been done keeping various parts of London city in mind. Will get more pictures from there next time I feel lke paying a fortune for stuff I can get street cheap. :-)

Pomegranate Juice Seller

The Delhi temperatures have gone from bad to worse. In one of the worst days of the season, more so because the office air conditioner decided to ditch me, I thought of posting the picture of a Juice seller. These small, almost portable shops are a haven for people who want a healthy option for quenching their thirsts. I had a huge glass of Pomegranate juice. Yum :-)

Bartan Shop

This is a utensils shop in Pharganj. The shop sells steel utensils, known in the vernacular language as 'bartans'. There are glasses, plates, knives, spoons, forks... and anything you name, you can have. The best part ofcourse is that you can bargain to your heart's content in such shops where variety is beyond anything you can imagine and that too within such a small cramped space.

100th Post: Gyarah Murti (11 statues)

I thought the 100th post of the blog should be dedicated to the father of our nation - Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known for many decades now as Mahatma or the Great Soul. This is the photograph of a landmark that depicts the Mahatma leading the Dandi march against the British tax on salt. The man had, single handedly, altered the course of the Indian struggle for freedom from a political movement to a mass movement.

Jai Hind! :)

EMU Train, Delhi

This is the Delhi EMU train, the former lifeline of Delhi. Now Delhi Metro has taken over gracefully and in amazing style. The EMU trains are still used by a lot of people living in the outskirts of the city and commuting daily to the Capital of India for work.

P.S: Tomorrow is the 100th post for Delhi Photo Diary. :-)

Indian Sundial Clock

This is something truly Indian. This is an Indian sundial clock on display in the Garden of Five Senses. It tells the accurate time of a place, measuring the position of the sun with respect to the longitude of the place. The Indian Standard Time (IST) is set in correspondence to the longitude : 25° 9′ 0″ N, 82° 30′ 0″ E, which passes through the city of Allahabad. However, with this sundial, one can find the exact scientific time in any place. The reason I get so fascinated with ancient Indian gadgets is the idea that people with comparatively far less resources were able to produce such marvels. I have just one thing to say for that Wow :-)

The other photographs from the Garden Of Five Senses featured in the blog are : Giant Wind Bell and Elephanta Fountains.

Saari

I am back from the wedding and I thought that the best way to stretch the festive mood was to bring a photograph of the traditional, red colored bridal attire. I found these heavily ornate saaris displayed on headless mannequins in a Karol Bagh shop. Saari is one garment that unites almost all the Indian ladies despite their different statehoods. The saari is one garment that is draped in several styles in different states. I will bring more saari draping styles int he future for you.

Will upload pictures of Indore in a couple of days. Nice city. I had a great time. :-)

Karol Bagh Market

This is one of the busiest markets of Delhi, Karol Bagh. I got this amazing top angle view from a restaurant called Raffles, which by the way has one of the best menus for ice-cream sodas in all of Delhi. Meanwhile, Karol Bagh is a great bargaining haven. In fact you can manage to bargain even at comparatively bigger shops rather than just with the roadside shops.

P.S: I am off to Indore, a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, to attend the wedding of a cousin. I'll be back after 5 days. Miss me. :-)

Jet-Age Station

I am back with my favorite muse from Delhi- the Metro station. So far I have shown you Rajiv Chowk, Delhi Metro construction site and the view inside the trains. This time I present an above the ground station... This particular photo reminds me of the cartoon show called Jetsons because of the very futuristic architecture of the station. The metro rails ply on an overhead bridge in some parts of the city and then go underground from that level. The ride is fun, especially looking out of the huge windows is a great experience. :-)

Colorful Education

This wall-painting I spotted in a pre-nursery school located in Karol Bagh. The colors are so vibrant that I half wished that I could be that age again, when the hardest part of the day would be singing rhymes, eating lunch and reciting "A,B, C, D" to innumerable family members or family- friends. :-)

Rain-washed

It is raining in Delhi and I am stranded either in my office or my house. So I present a simple rain-washed park just outside my office. One day, hopefully sooner than later, my colleagues and me will finally take the much-promised walk in the lush grass of the park... one day soon. :-)

PVR Plaza

This is one of the very famous cinema halls of Delhi. Once a theater that held premier shows of iconic films, it was renovated and turned into a multiplex. Just like the Malls are eating away local shops, so are multi-plexes erasing the memory of halls that had huge screens, dingy chairs , yummy pop-corns and most importantly inexpensive tickets. Anyway, cinema is cinema... and Bollywood films are a treat to watch anywhere. :-)

Rangoli

These patterns, made using flowers, are called Rangoli. Now a days, Rangolis are drawn out to mark a celebration or festival. However, traditionally Hindus made Rangolis in their courtyards everyday to welcome the Goddess of Wealth - Laxmi into their homes. :-)

Theme day: No!

This is a sign that is often spotted in several shops in various markets of Delhi. The reason is simple... Delhi loves to bargain and the shopkeepers try to take special measures to refrain the bargaining enthusiasts from indulging in their favorite sport. The sign notwithstanding, I managed to get very pretty silver earings for a good bargain... Not every No means a No! :-)
