Gaint Wind Bell

A gaint wind bell I had spotted some time ago at the Garden of Five Senses. The blowing wind made the bell ring in beautiful tones.

P.S : Scorching heat and a spell of bad health is forcing me produce photos from my stock. Hopefully I'll go out soon and capture more photos.

Hand-in-Hand

This photograph I could not resist from clicking and then presenting to you all. I saw these really cute kids on the railway platform of New Deli Railway station. I later learned that they were not siblings, not even relatives or children of family friends. They were unknown to each other but still were taking care of each other so warmly that I was glad that I captured the moment before their parents took them in separate directions.

India Habitat Center

The ceiling and floor of India Habitat Center. The ceiling is made of solar panels and the architecture is such that cool breeze welcomes you even in the severely scorching summer months. I will click more pictures next time I go visiting.

Chai-wale uncle

The 'Chai-wale uncle' is how we address this man, who has a shanty tea stall in a small 'gully' behind my office. The man makes tasty 'cutting-chai' and serves them in the traditional glasses. The other things that are available at his stall include Bread-Butter, 'Fein' and 'Mathhi'. So next time you are in Delhi and feel like a cup of tea... Its my treat at Chai-wale uncle's tea-stall. :-)

Music Room - All India Radio

Well this room is not something that any normal tourist visiting the city can see. This is the music recording room of All India Radio. I am one of the few privileged people who have access to the room while recording the announcements for the music shows that are aired through the airwaves of the national radio. I must say there are certain advantages of working as a Radio Presenter at the coveted office. :-)

Clean Delhi

This post is dedicated to this unknown face who I see cleaning the roads of Delhi everyday. Will talk to her one of these days. I am fascinated with the strong confident strokes of the broom that this petite lady has mastered. They remind me of the confident brush strokes of famous painters.

Traditional and Modern Symbols

An awesome view with an old fashioned kettle in the forefront and a towering building in the background. A mix of traditional and modern symbols. I took this picture from the Oxford Cha-bar. Its a place where a variety of tea are on the menu and you can buy books and at the same time sit for hours flipping through the pages of your favourite books.

Ansal Plaza

Ansal Plaza, the first shopping mall of Delhi. It is the one that pioneered mall culture in the city. Its a haven for the students of Kamla Nehru College (my college) and the neighbouring Gargi College. Reminiscing about the good old days, here is a shot of Ansal Plaza.

Mehendi

A heena/mehendi artist -Suman, applying heena/mehendi on the hands of a client. Mehendi is a form of artificial tatooing that many women in Delhi patronage. When in Delhi, you must go to Hanuman Mandir, where hundreds like Suman have their stalls for applying Mehendi/Heena in beautiful Indian patterns.

P.S. : Was not in Delhi the past few days. Was visiting Mumbai. Hope you missed me some. :-)

Mind Your Head

The Photo is courtsey Praniti's height and her mobile camera. :-)
Noticed this sign while Praniti and I met for a quick (un)healthy bite at McDonalds a couple of days ago. Hmmm it is a sane advice... Mind Your Head...

Giant Umbrella

This is a giant umbrella with appliqué work, a speciality of the craftsmen of Orissa that I spotted in Dilli Haat. It is made of cloth, so it will not be able to protect you from rain. It is too heavy to carry around in summers to protect yourself from shade. It is an elaborate showpiece that many connoisseurs like to collect. The work on the umbrella is traditionally Indian with elephant motifs on it.

Letter Box (Only For Delhi )

Even as the world passes-by quickly, the symbols of Indian postal services - Letter boxes, standstill waiting for that elusive letter that might be fed to them in this day and age of E-mail. When I had started with the idea of the Delhi Photo Diary, I had just thought of it as a collection of peculiar photos that define Delhi for me. However, with each passing day, it is turning out to be quite a revelation of the progress that the city has made within my lifetime of 24 years. The blog is now a chronilce of Delhi that is slowly but surely changing from how I like to remember it.

Subzi-Wala

Even as the food prices in India are rising, the local vegetable vendor keeps his stall well organised by displaying the assortment of vegetables in a very colour-co-ordinated fashion. In the Hindi vernacular the vegetable vendor is called the 'Subzi-Wala' and is generally the focal point for spreading all the gossip in the locality. He sure is an important man. Keeps the health nutrition in check and rumour mills rolling.

National Flower

The National Flower of India, Lotus, in full bloom in the wholesale flower market in Connaught Place. The Wholesale Flower Market is a unique market that opens for just 5 hours early in the morning and winds up by 9 A.M., 365 days a year. Will be posting many photographs from this place one of these days.

Elephanta Fountains

I had visited the Elephanta Caves in Mumbai when I was a very small girl. Though nothing like the caves, finding these fountains almost 15 years later in my city of Delhi, that could be christened Elephanta Fountains by me, was a pleasure. These fountains are situated in the Garden of Five Senses. An awesome place to visit if nature in its full bloom is what soothes you.

Rainy Roads

Unexpected rains cooled Delhi and did this to our roads. Wish I could go back in time and jump in the water puddles once again. :-)

Bus-Stop

A bus-stop, the place where most of the common-Delhities spend their mornings and evenings waiting for that elusive ride to arrive. I love the dynamics of a bus-stop. There are several parallel stories running at these joints.

Samosa with Special Chai

The staple diet for all Delhi walas... A cup of special chai (tea) and samosa (a salty fried snack, which is made of refined wheat flour stuffed with potatoes). This is best in times when your are hungry, but don't want to have a full meal, want to satisfy your taste buds, while giving no consideration whatsoever to calorie intake and need to feel refreshed. :-)

Relatively High

The biggest crane I have seen in recent times. The massive machine is being used in the construction of Gurgaon Metro line. It just made me wonder about the relativity. The building in the backdrop is Krishi Bhawan. As a child I always thought that the building was huge. As I grew vertically, the building just seemed to shrink. And today the crane made it look minuscule. Hmmm... something to think about.
