These patterns, made using flowers, are called Rangoli. Now a days, Rangolis are drawn out to mark a celebration or festival. However, traditionally Hindus made Rangolis in their courtyards everyday to welcome the Goddess of Wealth - Laxmi into their homes. :-)

Someone has gone to a great deal of effort here!
Anything specific here? In Kerala, every house does this 'flower rangoli' for the 10 days leading up to the Onam festival - this year it is on Sep 12, so the 'flower beds' will begin 2 months from now!
