The Dance of the Flame

With frequent electricity failures across Delhi, candles are a constant feature in homes in the city. I like capturing the different shapes of the flame. Here are a few of my favourite captures of the past few days.

Spreading the Warmth

As most of you know, my mother spent close to 6 months of this year in Jaipur undergoing treatment for cancer. Not one to rest and laze around, she along with my aaji (maternal grandmother) and my mami (maternal uncle's wife) she made close to 10 sweaters to gift to the children of our friends and family. Here are some of my favourites.

Chuski

This is a stand of an ice-cone seller. Ice-cones are called chuski in India and the bottles here are filled with numerous flavours. The sellers usually mix flavours as well depending on the choice of the customers. My favourite is Kala-Khatta. It is a black tangy flavour. Do try it if you get a chance!

Durga Pooja: Pandal Hopping

I had been planning to do this for the last 3 years for Maya, a blog follower from the US. She had mailed me long ago asking me to visit C R Park and get her photos from there to refresh her memory of the place she grew. Somehow the plan never materialized until yesterday.

Thanks to being surrounded by some wonderful Bangalis I went pandal hopping to pray to the Goddess in her majestic best. Lopamudra was the official guide and she was generous enough to take me around the pandals in South Delhi. Others joined in later and we had a fantastic time. Some photographs from yesterday.

From right to left: Sangeeta, Meghna, Supriya, Lopamudra, Shweta

Huge pandals like this one were set up across C R Park and GK-II.

The detailing of the decorations was nothing short of brilliance. This artificial tree had everything, green leaves, bee hives, nests and birds.

The lighting inside the pandals was done very artistically and added to the pious atmosphere.

Goddess in her various majestic moods!

These special drums are called dhaks and are decorated with beautiful cloth pieces and faux feathers.

Dried coconut fibre is burnt in these earthen pots along with incense. Men and women dance to the tune of the dhaks holding these earthen pots. This dance is called Dhunuchi Naach.

This young boy danced and played the gong like instrument close to 40 minutes to accompany the dhaks.

There was a beautiful dance performance about the various tales associated with the Goddess.

The streets were lit with lights and children and a few adults (like my friends and I) indulged in the merriment by blowing soap bubbles.

The streets were lined with numerous shops selling yummy snacks. I discovered Puchkas (a brother of the Delhi Gol Guppas) and fell in love

There were other things for sale as well like candy floss etc.

That was the day I had. It was fantastic. I'm already waiting for next year and doing this again :-)

Happy Bijoy Dashmi everyone!

Will post a couple of videos tomorrow :-)

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

Blue-Green Magic Morning

I love the combination of a good, clear, blue sky and lush green trees. Was happy to see this at the Lodi Gardens where morning joggers were in full force.

October Theme Day: Mystery object: Bubbles

I have been fascinated with soap bubbles since I was a kid. It was mandatory for my parents to buy me a pack of soap bubbles along with the straw (bubble maker) that were being sold at India Gate. Even at the age of 28 I still think that the bubbles are the best gift someone can give me at India Gate.

The reason I chose bubbles as my post for the theme day is because they are mysterious. They are never the same size. They create a unique magic with light every time. They are free and love their freedom and enjoy it to the max even in their short life.
